Doctoral research in systems engineering
The rapid growth of graduate programs in systems engineering has led to more doctoral students pursuing research. This evolution is a positive indicator of the maturity of the systems engineering profession because more Ph.D.s with the right preparation can have an impact in a variety of ways. My experience has shown that about 50 percent of those who graduate with a Ph.D. in systems engineering work in industry or government, while 25 percent work in consulting and 25 percent work in academia. I would imagine industrial engineering graduates pursue similar career paths.
