Engineering Economy Division

Members are involved in economic and investment analysis. The key concern of these industrial engineers is to improve productivity and quality through public and private sector decision making about the economic feasibility and justification of investments in technological innovations. Members receive Engineering Economy Solutions, a periodic electronic newsletter containing information on important new cost reduction techniques.

About the division

Engineering Economy Division members are interested in economic and investment analyses. The key concern is to improve productivity and quality through public and private sector decision making regarding the economic feasibility and justification of investments in technological innovations.

As of September 2012, the division has 3,392 members, including 2,254 students and 1,138 professionals.

Call for Nominations

The Engineering Economy Division is seeking nominations for the following officer positions:

  • Communications Director - The communications director is elected for a one-year term and is responsible for the newsletter, conference announcements and other communications with EED members. In the following three years the communications director will succeed in order to the positions of program chair, president and immediate past president.
  • Board of Directors - The division is electing one member to the Board of Directors, who will serve for a two-year term. The Board of Directors assists, advises, and directs the officers of the division. A specific duty of the board is to identify and execute strategic initiatives to enhance division effectiveness.
  • Wellington Award Committee Member - A committee member will serve a three-year term. Members who are previous recipients of the award are especially encouraged to volunteer.
  • Representative to the editorial board of The Engineering Economist - A representative will serve a three-year term. TEE authors are especially encouraged to volunteer.

Self-nominations are welcomed. Student members are not eligible.

The Engineering Economist

The refereed journal includes articles, case studies, surveys, book and software reviews and reader comments that represent current research, practice and teaching involving capital investment. It is published quarterly by a joint partnership of the engineering economy divisions of the American Society of Engineering Education and the Institute of Industrial Engineers.

Best Paper Award 2012
Congratulations to Kevin Ochs, Michael Miller and Alfred E. Thal Jr. of the Air Force Institute of Technology on their receipt of the 2012 Best Paper Award in Engineering Economy for "Time Valued Technology: Evaluating Infrastructure Replacement with Rapidly Emerging Technology."

2012 Wellington Award
HartmanDr. Joseph Hartman, industrial and systems engineering department chair at the University of Florida, is the recipient of the 2012 Wellington Award. The Wellington Award, given at the IIE Annual Conference & Expo, recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of engineering economy.

The award is named after Arthur M. Wellington, author of The Economic Theory of Railroad Location, in 1887. More information about the Wellington Award.

Call for Abstracts and Papers

ISERC 2013, May 18-22, Puerto Rico
Engineering Economy Track will cover the breadth and depth of various engineering economy disciplines. The track invites papers and abstracts in the general areas of productivity and quality improvement through decision making regarding the economic feasibility and justification of investments. Topics may include investment analysis, technology innovation, financial engineering, life-cycle cost analysis and management, engineering economy education, and prices and portfolios.

If you are interested to organize an invited session, please contact track chairs Gillian Nicholls or Erick Jones. The best paper will be awarded during the conference.

Call for Applied Solution Track Chair 

The division is seeking the nomination for the chair of an Applied Solutions Engineering Economy track at IIE Annual Conference & Expo 2013. Please contact Natalie Scala for nomination.
