Award for excellence in the teaching of lean concepts

IIE Lean Division is pleased to announce the winner of the Third Annual Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Lean Concepts as the team of three faculty members: Andres L. Carrano, John T. Kaemmerlen and Jacqueline Mozrall of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York.

The winning team has been developing and teaching a series of innovative undergraduate and graduate level courses on lean practice and modeling using experiential learning approaches in a production systems lab setting (http://www.rit.edu/kgcoe/ise/facilities/ToyotaLab). The award committee has concluded that the above team deserves recognition for lean teaching excellence from leadership, contents and quality, applied learning, innovation, and student satisfaction perspectives. We would like to congratulate the winning team and thank them for their outstanding contributions to the field of lean system modeling and design.

The award will be given at the Annual Honors & Awards Banquet on June 7 at the IIE Annual Conference in Cancún, Mexico.

Lean student paper competition winners

IIE Lean Division is pleased to announce the winners of the fourth Lean Student Paper Competition sponsored by J T and Carol S. Black. The competition recognizes outstanding papers in the field of lean research and practices. 

First Place
goes to Mariza Siller, Taidé Sanchez, and Jair Onofre with the Universidad de Monterrey, San Pedro Garza Garcia, Nuevo León, México for their paper, “Reducing Order Cycle Time through a TOC-Lean Approach: A Case Study.” 
Second Place is awarded to Cecilia Martínez with the Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, for her paper, “A Coordination Mechanism for Lean Product Development.”  
Third Place is awarded to Monica C. Villareal and Tuba Yilmaz with the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta for their paper, “A Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Rounding Process Lean Transformation.”
 
Awards will be given at the annual Honors & Awards Banquet during IIE Annual Conference. The first place winner will be included in the IIE Annual Award list. Winning papers will be presented at the Industrial Engineering Research Conference (IERC) 2010 at a separate session starting  at 2:20 p.m. June 8 in Coral Gallery 1A.

Learning to see ... again!

We all reach a level of inefficiency when we don’t get to practice the skills that have been taught to us or we have learned. I had been working with developing training materials and had not been around the execution end of the lesson plan in a while. When it came time to apply the lean skills to the process at hand, I had to revisit many of the things that I inherently knew but were no longer at the surface of the conscience mind. IIE Annual Conference 2010: IERC Research Sessions, Lean Systems Track - Update
June 5-9, 2010, at the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach Hotel, Cancún, Mexico

The track on Lean Systems at the IIE Annual Conference is a forum for researchers and practitioners to share research focused on the application of Lean Systems concepts to improve organizational performance. A large number of abstracts in diverse areas related to Lean were received this time. We are excited to announce that there will be 16 research sessions (almost 60 percent higher than at 2009 IIE Annual Conference) and a tutorial session under the Lean Systems track this year! Tentative agenda of sessions

Goals

  • Develop, maintain and disseminate a body of technical knowledge.
  • Provide a forum for technical networking.
  • Be perceived as the voice of the technical specialty.
  • Collaborate with IIE to support the mission of the Institute, provide member value and promote the discipline.
  • Work with the Networking Leadership Council to establish a set of metrics that track Society & Division activities.
