Atlantic Health System is one of the largest nonprofit healthcare systems in New Jersey. Our world-class hospitals are on the forefront of medicine and continually set standards for quality healthcare in the New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area.

As the corporate director of planning and decision support, I’m responsible for the development and coordination of strategic imperatives that fulfill our mission and vision. I direct all decision support data and state licensure activities, support merger and acquisition due diligence, and manage all Request for Affiliation and Certificate of Need processes. I also guide strategic oversight for our 2,200-plus volunteer staff functions across the enterprise.

The best part of my job is knowing that the decision support analysis on strategic initiatives that we perform in my department is instrumental in setting the direction of the organization. In the infancy stages of the strategic planning process, hundreds of potential initiatives are introduced. Through analysis, this multitude of initiatives is filtered down to help fulfill our vision of “empowering our communities to be the healthiest in the nation.”

With numerous years working in the operational aspect of healthcare via process improvement, the perfect day includes the use of these tools and techniques in nontraditional areas. Improving a process that nobody believes could be fixed is a testament to the power of industrial engineering. Instability and unpredictability of the healthcare sector landscape presents a big challenge. Since the financial capital to implement the strategic imperatives may total in the hundreds of millions of dollars, the perfect workday would include the ability to see a vision of the future for the healthcare market that allows insightful investment decisions ensuring the long-term success of the organization.
