One of the benefits of belonging to a professional society is the opportunity to share knowledge about various topics of interest.

Topic: Visual sensing and Data Analytics
By: Mehdi Khazaeli, Assistant Professor, Engineering Management, University of the Pacific
Research Overview: Dr. Khazaeli and his research team at UOP are working on multimedia analysis and using contextual cueing to improve segmentation, scene detection and object recognition (Figure 1 presents a framework for visual sensing applications). This research will ultimately contribute to sport biomechanics, training environment and building information modelling.

Announcement: 2015 CIS Best Paper Competition winner
Congratulations to Yun Chen and Hui Yang, University of South Florida, winner of the 2015 CIS Best Paper Competition, for their paper, "Sparse Particle Filtering for Modeling Space-time Dynamics in Stochastic Sensor Network." The winner will be recognized at the IIE Annual Conference & Expo to be held May 30-June 2 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Announcement: Finalists Selected for the 2015 ISERC CIS Mobile App Competition

Dr. Yang gave the fourth IIE CIS sponsored webinar on March 25, on "Sparse Particle Filtering for Modeling Space-Time Dynamics in Distributed Sensor Networks." There were a total of 18 registered participants for the webinar, and the webinar received very positive feedback. In this webinar, Dr. Yang presented new methods for identifying and modeling spatial and temporal patterns from distributed sensor systems. In this age of the "Internet of Things" (IoT), Dr. Yang's work has significant application to developing IoT technologies in a wide range of areas including wearable health monitoring devices, transportation & logistics network monitoring, and environmental monitoring networks. Click here to view the recording and the presentation.
