Healthcare is one of the most important, yet distressed, sectors of the U.S. economy. Total expenditures in healthcare are growing rapidly, from $1.6 trillion (14.9 percent of the gross domestic product) in 2002 to an estimated $3.6 trillion (18.4 percent of gross domestic product) by 2013.
