Executive summaries of IIE Transactions

Edited by Susan Albin and John Fowler

This month we highlight two articles that show industrial engineers contributing to more efficient manufacturing process design and operation. In the first article, a model for flow lines is developed that helps Heineken fill its bottles of beer while balancing the goal of high-speed filling with the cost of very long conveyor belts. The second article shows that it is valuable to consider machine replacement plans strategically in the design stage of a manufacturing system. These articles will appear in the March issue of IIE Transactions (Volume 45, No. 3).
