I have been trying to simplify my messages because people are overwhelmed with information. Anything I share could spill over the edges of their memory bowl and be lost forever, but a few ideas might stick. The concept of leadership is no exception.

While there are many approaches, Monte Carlo simulations set ranges of and assign probabilities to certain outcomes. Monte Carlo simulations were used first in U.S. government atomic weapons research. The simulation provided a range of outcomes and illustrated the distribution of possible outcomes. This helped determine the probabilities of certain events. Your warehouse analysis provides a similar situation.

In Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the author lists “sharpen the saw” as the seventh habit, founded on the principles of balanced self-renewal. This seems like a good time to highlight mental, physical, social, emotional and spiritual activities that we can exercise to put a new edge on our thinking related to healthcare systems engineering.

Imagine all cars, buses and trucks wirelessly interconnected and geographically aware through integrated GPS and road-condition sensors. The “surprises” that lead to vehicle-related collisions, accidents and injuries would be reduced. This kind of advanced connectivity could lead to vehicles that are far more fuel efficient and nonpolluting.
