I grew up in a paper mill town in the 1960s — the pre-EPA 1960s. It was not unusual to see colored or foamy water when I hiked in the woods behind the mill. At the time, I thought this was normal — I did not recognize the pollution for what it really was. Now, of course, it is hard to find such colorful water in that environment.
