Pre-Conference Workshops - Monday, March 22
Take advantage of the opportunity to enhance your skills and boost your learning by participating in a pre-conference workshop. Learn from experienced practitioners who will address your concerns about ergonomics. They are open to all registered conference attendees and require a separate fee.

Workplace Design: Accommodating Diverse Workers
Bruce Bradtmiller, Ph.D., Anthrotech
Sheryl Ulin, Ph.D., CPE, University of Michigan, Center for Ergonomics
(Beginner/Intermediate)
Increasing anthropometric diversity in worker populations requires re-thinking how we perform job and workplace design. This increasing diversity includes the national obesity epidemic, changing population demographics, e.g. immigrant worker populations, and the aging work force. In this workshop we will look at how anthropometric data can be used in job and workplace design and how that process should be modified to accommodate increasing worker diversity. Examples from actual workplaces are used to illustrate both the problems and potential solutions.
This program is arranged in conjunction with the University of Michigan Center for Occupational Health and Safety Engineering, a NIOSH sponsored Education and Research Center.
Lessons Learned in the Trenches: Applying Ergonomics in a Manufacturing Environment
Ergonomists from major U.S. manufacturers, including Texas Instruments, Raytheon and Honda
Implementing ergonomics within a production facility can be challenging. In this workshop, you will hear how noted ergonomists have addressed and overcome a variety of obstacles within their companies and created successful ergonomics processes. Bring your ergonomics questions and current problems for these experts and other workshop attendees to discuss. (Basic/Intermediate)
Job Rotation as a Strategy to Reduce Risk of Musculoskeletal Disorders
Mardy Frazer, Ph.D., Sandalwood Engineering & Ergonomics
Have you been told that job rotation is a "good thing" and it's your job to make it happen? This workshop will be of interest to supervisors, ergonomists and those involved with work place design or establishing workloads. It will explore job rotation as a prevention tool for musculoskeletal disorders. You will learn about current job rotation knowledge; risk factors for low back pain and upper extremity cumulative trauma; specific assessment tools that can help quantify high-risk jobs and show how peak and cumulative loading of different jobs can impact a job rotation design. You can also expect to work in small groups and apply information learned. By the end of this workshop, you will have the knowledge to develop appropriate job rotation schedules - or feel more confident when they make the recommendation NOT to rotate! (Basic/Intermediate)
1 p.m.-5 p.m. (select one)
Ergo 101: The Basics of Ergonomics
Gary Allread, Ph.D., CPE, Institute for Ergonomics, The Ohio State University
Continuing an Applied Ergonomics Conference tradition of offering conference registrants a low-cost, high-quality seminar, this session is intended to help those who are new to the ergonomics discipline or have ergonomics responsibilities. This workshop will provide an introduction to fundamental ergonomic principles, emphasize the identification of risk factors and review the elements of effective ergonomic processes. Examples and case studies from a variety of industrial settings will be reviewed, as will those pertaining to office ergonomic issues. (Basic)
Ergo 101: The Basics of Ergonomics - in Spanish (CANCELLED)
Scott Openshaw, CPE, Allsteel Inc.
(Basic)
Justifying the Costs of Ergonomics Improvements
Richard Goggins, M.S., CPE, Washington State Department of Labor and Industries
This popular workshop is being offered again this year. Using real-world examples, activities, and hands-on practice, this workshop will give you the skills you need to cost-justify your ergonomics projects and programs. It will provide an overview of various cost-benefit principles and models, as well as the information needed for a proper analysis. You will have an opportunity to practice with a simple cost-benefit analysis model that was designed to be usable by ergonomics practitioners. Bring examples from your workplace to use in the analysis. Everyone who attends will be given a free CD containing cost-benefit models and useful resources. (Basic/Intermediate)
8 a.m.-5 p.m. (all day)
