President's message

Dear Division Members,

This is a special moment for our division since it was founded 10 years ago. As most of you know, we have had only one president in the name of Dr. Lincoln H. Forbes. As the founding and only president the division had known since inception, his vision, foresight, enthusiasm, and determination to follow through resulted in an IIE Division with 1,600 members currently. This happened within 10 short years and is an accomplishment we should all be proud of.  Please join me in thanking Lincoln and the members of the board of directors who worked with him to make this happen. Thank you for a job well done.

As the current president, I shall do my best to move the division forward. It is truly an honor to serve as your president for the 2013 – 2014 term. Since joining IIE in 1988 and specifically the Construction Division in 2005, I have had the opportunity to work with and learn from the best group of professionals there is. Members of our previous boards were very dedicated, focused, organized, and above all friendly. These attributes made our division one of the most dynamic and forward-looking divisions within IIE.

In the spirit of continuous improvement, we will constantly look for ways to improve our internal processes. It will take new and innovative ideas from all of us to do so. Coincidentally our new board is made up of both new and experienced members. I believe this mix will help ensure continuity and success for our division. Let me use this opportunity to thank our new board members for volunteering to serve.

Our top priority will be to provide quality services to our members. To this effect, the new board recently approved a strategic plan that will guide us for the next three years. The major goals in the strategic plan are to:

  1. Attain and maintain green level status on all required categories in the Division Health Report.
  2. Increase the percentage of professional and student membership by 15 percent respectively within three years by leveraging social media platforms and other appropriate membership drive methods.
  3. Increase educational offerings presented to membership to at least two annually in addition to conference offerings.

In subsequent messages, I will discuss in detail how we plan to achieve the above goals.

Meanwhile, the board is already planning for the IIE Annual Conference & Expo 2014 scheduled to take place in Montreal, Canada from May 31 - June 3, 2014. As a tradition, we will have two main tracks as follows: A) The Research Track which is part of ISERC program and covers the latest concepts and research that impact the direction of the construction industry; B) The Solutions Track, which covers applications of IE principles in the construction industry. We will share more information with you as they become available.

Until next time, thank you and enjoy the remaining days in summer.

Aloysius A. Attah, P.E.
