Member Spotlight - Jeseekia Vaughn

In this section, we highlight a SEMS student member for outstanding leadership in IIE and for exceptional service to the Society.

This month, we honor Jeseekia Vaughn!

Jeseekia Vaughn is a fifth-year student studying industrial and systems engineering at Wayne State University. She served as the chapter president of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and the Region IV Vice Chairperson in the National Society for Black Engineers (NSBE). She received the IIE Gold Award in recognition of her outstanding leadership as president of the WSU chapter of IIE during the 2012-2013 year. Her leadership in her NSBE chapter at Wayne State contributed to the growth from a small chapter to more than 61 members in one year!

This year she will be leading a mentoring initiative as membership chair in order to help build and develop the chapter members. Last year, she was a Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) mentor in her hometown of Detroit, Mich., and she is looking forward to helping such a great program continue to grow and expand into new territory. This year, she is the site director of the first all-girls camp of SEEK in Jackson, Miss., and will mentor again in Detroit. She is currently the vice president of the Beta Mu chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and an active SEMS Student Initiatives member.

According to Jeseekia, success is the result of a combination of a huge knowledge appetite, motivation, drive and independence. She also believes that one must dig to find passion in life and that a good starting point is by writing out at least 20 skills, hobbies, and talents. Passion along with purpose are crucial to overcome obstacles when pursuing our goals in personal and professional lives. Her favorite quote: “Waiting to develop courage is just another form of procrastination. The most successful people take action while they’re afraid.”

Thanks to Jeseekia for her outstanding professional and community service at IIE, SEMS, NSBE and SEEK, among others!
