Student Liaison message
I hope everyone is having a successful end of the year, and is looking forward to the summer months. As a fourth year at The Ohio State University, my time left at school grows short. Upon reflecting on the experiences I’ve had these recent years, what has been most valuable to me has not been any particular knowledge or skill, but the people I have met: an amazing network of peers, professors and friends.
The network of people you forge in college and in IIE is something that will remain with you for life. I strongly urge everyone to connect with as many industry professionals and peers as possible. Don’t be afraid to seek out a mentor in your field of interest, to introduce yourself to an executive at work, or to grab coffee with a colleague. These are the people who may someday get you a job, and who will remain lifelong friends with whom you will learn from and have fun.
There is no better opportunity to foster your network than at IIE conferences. The IIE national conference is fast approaching, and you won’t be able to find a more impressive gathering of industry professionals and students, all of whom are passionate about the Industrial Engineering profession. If you are able, I strongly encourage everyone to attend, as the array of networking opportunities, keynote speakers, research sessions, workshops, and exhibit showcases are second to none.
I leave you with a challenge and a pearl of wisdom: In addition to being a resource to others, don’t be afraid to build new relationships in your network, as well. "You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people, than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you." – Dale Carnegie
If I can help you in any way, if you have any questions about IIE or the Construction Division, or if you would like to share any experiences you’ve had in industry, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I would love to hear from you.
