This principle applies to all types and sizes of enterprises. The EE concept is applied in developing and executing variety of growth strategy proposals in some industries.
Operations managers need to make complicated maintenance prioritization and actions plans for their systems. These systems typically include multiple pieces of inter-connected equipment which require maintenance. Often such models isolate equipment when maintenance decisions are to be made. This presentation presents a case for considering multiple pieces of equipment together when evaluating a maintenance policy for a dependent component. This is accomplished by reviewing the optimal policy of the two-component system compared to a non-optimal policy. Such work could be scaled to other applications such as industrial equipment.

This presentation discusses the effect of dynamic simulation on reducing length of stay and its impact on bed allocation and hospital capacity. Using real data for analysis, a step-by-step implementation path is presented that takes real-time data, provides analytics for practitioners, and helps in improving communication and overall capacity of different departments in the hospital. Risk in Economic Choices I - Risk Identification
In today’s uncertain economic world the risk that engineering firms experience when making capital budgeting decisions can be significant. This webinar is intended to be the first of three which will be held over the coming months. The purpose of this series is to explore the risk of economic choices. This first session will focus on how to identify and, in some cases, quantify risk in choices that involve capital decisions. The format for the webinar will be interactive and contain some presentation style information about the topic as well as a small case study.

This presentation describes how to move from a "quality-owned" to a "process-area-owned" management review process in the ISO 9001 or ISO 13485 environments. This shift leads to accountability for efficient and effective processes throughout the organization. The content includes the before-and-after approach used to make the review more engaging and risk based. These processes include production controls, product design, sourcing and material controls, human resources, environmental, CAPA, document and configuration management, and customer feedback. The method has been recognized as a best practice by external assessors.
Bob Waters discusses the role of research, the search for new knowledge, in engineering management; this including differentiating between engineering management [EM] and systems engineering [SE]. Also, he distinguishes between academic research and industrial research, and will reflect on the impact of research, teaching and service on an academic career, including the role of tenure in the process. He examines the political aspects of a dissertation, and the importance of out-the-Department experts in developing the topic. Following tenure, he suggests developing industrial and/or government contacts through meetings, publications, visits, sabbaticals, exchanges, etc., to build outside relationships to support an ongoing research program.
Lost knowledge is a significant issue facing today’s leaders as shifting demographics are threatening the future capabilities of their workforce. The scope of this webinar is to examine a knowledge retention strategy from four perspectives: human resources processes and practices; knowledge transfer processes; IT applications to capture, store and share knowledge; and knowledge recovery initiatives. We will use David W. DeLong's methodology to demonstrate a practical application of a knowledge retention strategy and process in the workplace. We conclude that the use of a knowledge retention framework creates a roadmap for organizations on how to mitigate the risk of the loss of knowledge in an aging workforce.
The webinar is based around the Shingo Prize winning book Staying Lean, co-written by Peter Hines, and his 20 years of application of lean. In this period many global corporations and smaller organizations have adopted lean approaches with a range of success. In many cases a good deal of the execution has resulted in disappointment in terms of the degree of sustainability of the activity and results. This is particularly the case with organizations that have simply adopted tools based approach involving a "kaizen events" and value stream mapping. Using the analogy of an iceberg, we term this an "above the water" approach. What our research has shown is this, on its own, is simply not sustainable without the enabling "below the water" areas of strategy and alignment, leadership, and behavior and engagement. The webinar focuses both on the framework to make this work as well as the eight years journey of multinational manufacturer, Cogent Power in not just going lean but creating a sustainable lean business system.

Getting your research published is critical in the early stages of your career as a new faculty member. For many new faculty, feedback on your early manuscripts may result in a sense of inadequacy. Having a manuscript rejected is a disheartening experience.
