Their state of the art products, solutions and services are delivered through a global sales, customer support and manufacturing network. The Westbury plant is a manufacturing facility for thermal spray equipment and materials that is heavily into engineering new processes and equipment, and also contains a coating solutions lab.

Equipment and materials for thermal spray and thin film
Coating solutions for thermal spray and thin film
Engine components for industrial and aero turbines
Friction linings
Customer support services

The company has implemented various improvement initiatives including lean methodologies over the years which have improved their efficiencies as well as their profit margins. This will be a joint tour with the APICS and the SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers) and space is limited, so please respond promptly.

So far the response to the Chapter's new eNewsletter has been very positive. I still urge anyone who is still receiving the printed version in the mail to consider providing your email address if you have one. As I mentioned last month this will enable the Chapter to provide funding for other events and some worthwhile causes.
Last month the feature speaker was Ted Bier of T.M. Bier & Associates, Inc. who provided excellent information in regards to how a company can save money on their energy bills and possibly obtain funding and tax deductions / rebates for energy initiatives. Please read the review below for the details of Ted's presentation.

This month's we will be joining APICS and SME on a tour of Sulzer Metco (US) Inc. in Westbury, NY. Some of you may have been with us when we last visited this company in January 2006. Sulzer Metco is very committed to LEAN and Six Sigma practices, which is driven from the top down. I am told that they have made additional strides in the past three years. I urge you to register for this event. This will be a great opportunity to network with members of APICS and SME and at the same time get some valuable insight on how a company can positively affect the bottom line.

Review of the April Meeting

At the April meeting IIE Senior member Ted Bier of T.M. Bier & Associates, Inc. provided a timely presentation on Qualifying and Funding Real Green Projects for Industrial/Commercial Facilities. The focus of Ted's presentation included the types of energy projects, how to obtain funding, and Green Building certification through LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.

There are a number of projects that an organization can get involved with for an industrial / commercial facility. For one a building management system (BMS) along with system integration can be very effective in reducing energy consumption while sustaining a building's operation. The type of system that can be integrated include: HVAC equipment (air handling units, cooling towers, pumps, chillers, boilers, etc.), lighting controls, day lighting photocells, security access control, CCTV, power monitoring and control, shading systems, micro turbines, photovoltaic net metering 6 to 8 year payback, wind good for conservation, and Elevator controls. Some of the benefits of system integration are: Installation cost reductions along with shared infrastructure (wiring, controllers, workstations, devices, etc.), operational efficiencies centralization, "single seat" access faster response, less hardware, less training, and cross checking. Some other benefits of a BMS are the ability to take performance measurements, verification of systems operations, and provide reporting.

Ted pointed out that there are a number of funding opportunities for energy projects including utility rebates from LIPA, National Grid, and NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority). Although funding from NYSERDA does not apply to Long Island. On a federal level, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPACT) has also created some funding possibilities that includes commercial building immediate tax deductions for lighting and HVAC, which can also apply to rental properties (4 stories or above)
and tenant owned lease hold improvements. Traditional payback / return on Investment / Capital funds will typically net 8% to 15% reduction in "hard cost" operating expenses (e.g. utilities). Typically an additional 2% to 7% reduction in "soft costs" (e.g. HVAC equipment, maintenance, staff productivity, filters, belts) resulting in 5 to 12 year payback.
IIE Senior member Ted Bier of T.M. Bier & Associates, Inc.
Commercial facilities may also qualify for immediate building deductions. Deductions are based on improvements over ASHRAE 90.1 2001 (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers) the energy code standard. The criteria to qualify are: energy efficient improvements must be depreciable assets, converts 39 year depreciation to current deduction, originally for installations completed in 2006 & 2007 (now extended thru 2013, which is retroactive for up to three years). Deduction amounts are the lesser of total cost or: $1.80/sq.ft. whole building, $0.60/sq.ft. individual systems for lighting, HVAC, and building envelope. An example is shown in Figure 1.

A couple of other financing alternatives include creating an internal energy funding pool by working with your company's CFO / Controller and through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which is still in the works. Ted suggested that on Long Island you can take note of the latest developments by logging on to Congressman Steve Israel's Web site (http://israel.house.gov/) then click on the Energy & Economic Recovery button. You also may consider joining his energy task force.

The Green Building topic has been in the news more and more as of late. LEED certification has become a sought after label for property owners / operators. As a professional you can obtain certification as a LEED AP (Accredited Professional), CEM (Certified Energy Manager), and/or PE (Professional Engineer).

Along with Ted to answers question were: Jacob Goldman of Energy Tax Savers Inc. (516 364 2630) and Joe Deluca and Matthew LaPorte of Quinn & Feiner a HVAC service company. For further information you can visit the T.M. Bier & Associates, Inc. website at www.tmba.com or contact Ted at 516 674 3700.
