Future Cities Competition

The mission of the National Engineers Week Future City Competition is to provide a fun and exciting educational engineering program for seventh and eighth-grade students that combines a stimulating engineering challenge with a "hands-on" application to present their vision of a city of the future.  The Future City Competition is a great event where 7th and 8th graders simulate a future city focusing on a main theme.  They use SimCity to simulate their city, write an essay on the benefits of living in their city, and build a model describing some key aspects of their city.

During the first round, IIE judges have asked every student, what discipline of engineering are they interested in? Mostly commonly students respond, "Electrical, Computer, Civil, or Mechanical." Hence, IIE's involvement in judging the competition is a great opportunity to engage and educate students about the value and knowledge that an IE brings to the table.

It is about that time to start getting involved!  If you know a local school contact that might like to get involved or if you would like to be a judge, volunteer, or team mentor, please read the 2008 flyer

I participated last year and plan to do so again this year.  It is a lot of fun and I hope some of you can join me.

Congratulations 2008 Regional Winners:

Alexis Armijo, Ciara Thornhill, Alexxis Valencia from St. Patrick's School in Pasco

For the second year in a row, St. Patrick's School took the regional title with the help of their teacher, Susan Taber, and engineering partner, Ben W. Volk, P.E. of J-U-B Engineers, Inc. with a city called Rossidio.

Congratulations 2007 Regional Winners:

Alexis Armijo, Francesca Lahoz, and Libby Volk from St. Patrick's School in Pasco.

With the help of their teacher, Susan Taber, and engineer partner, Ben Volk of J-U-B Engineers, Inc., these three outstanding students designed Siddiran.  In their own words, "Welcome to Siddiran, the city of perfection, where our standards are making living fun, easy, inexpensive, and healthy. Our pollution level of only four percent plays a huge factor in our city, such as keeping out citizens’ average life expectancy to 86 years. Siddiran’s recreation and commerce are a great source of pride. Recreation helps Siddiran by keeping the city fun for people from 1 to 101."
